🚨 Field Rescue

Search the field problem first.

Type the field clue, get the closest rescue cards first, then use the proper trade name, risk lane, first checks, and foreman ask. The full 985-route bank stays underneath the search.

How to use this

1Search what you see. Use normal words. You do not need the perfect trade name.
2Read the warning level. Red means stop and verify. Yellow means check first.
3Ask clean. Copy the foreman script if drawings, specs, code, or site rules control the answer.

Field rule

TinnerFlow helps you slow down and ask better. It does not approve cutting, drilling, rigging, rated work, seismic/structural attachment, grease duct changes, or field modifications.

Foreman, approved drawings, specs, manufacturer instructions, employer policy, and AHJ/local code always win.

First 10 seconds

Answer first. Library second.

Search returns the closest rescue route cards first. Trade-name helper notes, related mistakes, and browse lanes stay below the answer so the page does not turn into a scavenger hunt.

Field fabrication basics

Cut, fit, hang, and set — static field-fab cards.

These crawlable cards cover the practical field sequence apprentices usually learn the hard way: taps, squaring taps, O.W.L. offsets, reducers, round duct cuts, duct assembly, supports, curbs, delivery day, dampers, access, flex, and exposed duct cleanup.

Taps / takeoffs / spin-ins

Rough searches: cutting in taps · square the tap · spin-in · saddle tap · cookie

Proper lane: Trace the inside throat, control the cookie before it drops, set the tap, square the throat during install, then fasten. Avoid seams, stiffeners, liner, and turbulent locations.

O.W.L. / reducers / angle finding

Rough searches: owl method · flat-left reducer · find the angle · throwing a kick

Proper lane: Verify offset geometry, reducer orientation, airflow direction, and whether field modification is approved.

Cut / assemble / modify duct

Rough searches: Sawzall duct · knockdown duct · putting duct together · field-chopping

Proper lane: Control the cut, align before forcing, keep connection allowance, and stop on lined/rated/grease/high-pressure assemblies.

Supports / curbs / delivery day

Rough searches: allthread cutting · Unistrut cutting · Gripple wires · building curbs · crane day

Proper lane: Cut support material cleanly, verify ratings/structure, square curbs, and hold crane day mismatches before unhooking.

Dampers / access / flex

Rough searches: volume damper buried · access door blocked · flex saggy · diffuser pulled crooked

Proper lane: Keep access reachable, set dampers for TAB, seal flex inner/outer layers, and avoid long sagging/kinked runs.

Exposed duct cleanup

Rough searches: exposed pookie · showroom iron · architectural finish · dirty spiral

Proper lane: Treat visible duct like finish work: clean hands, straight screws, no Sharpie, clean sealant lines, reject bad dents before hanging.

Field slang translator

Field slang, mapped to proper trade terms.

This is the static no-JS/crawler-readable version of the Field Rescue translator. Apprentices can type rough jobsite wording — pookie, dog leg, duct singing, mystery duct — but the answer should land on the proper trade term, first checks, stop/hold points, and a cleaner foreman ask. This is educational support only: approved drawings, specs, manufacturer/listing direction, employer policy, AHJ/code, and the foreman always win.

Duct alignment / elevation / obstruction

Rough searches: duct’s crooked · won’t reach · gap between sections · offset hits roof drain

Proper lane: Duct will not line up — isolate alignment, elevation, obstruction, or fitting cause

Check first: Confirm centerline, BOD/TOD, slope/pitch, and latest drawing or sketch

Stop / ask: Do not force the joint, oval the duct, notch structure, move fire sprinkler/electrical/plumbing, or change elevation/route without foreman/project direction.

Reducer / transition / wrong fitting

Rough searches: wrong size reducer · square-to-round wrong side · transition too sharp

Proper lane: Wrong reducer or transition — verify size, orientation, flat side, and clearance before installing

Check first: Verify duct sizes, neck sizes, airflow direction, and the latest shop drawing/submittal

Stop / ask: Do not cut down a reducer, flip it, force it into steel, or field-fabricate a replacement unless the foreman approves the correction path.

S-cleat / drive cleat / Pittsburgh / field-fab joint

Rough searches: drive cleat won’t slide · S-cleat won’t fit · Pittsburgh pocket bent shut

Proper lane: Cleat or seam will not close — check square, edge condition, and joint type before hammering

Check first: Identify the joint first: S-cleat, drive cleat, Pittsburgh, slip-and-drive, snaplock/button-lock, end cap, or raw-edge pocket

Stop / ask: Do not beat the cleat until the duct deforms, drive a damaged pocket closed, leave the back side open, or hide a seam that could fail under pressure/test.

TDC/TDF/Ductmate flange / gasket / leak

Rough searches: leaking at the corners · air spitting out the joint · hissing at the flange

Proper lane: TDC/Ductmate connection trouble — square the joint before chasing leaks

Check first: Check flange alignment, corner pieces, gasket placement, clips/clamps, bolt holes, and companion angle

Stop / ask: Do not bury a bad flange with mastic, overtighten stripped hardware, skip a corner, or seal a leak before the joint is mechanically right.

Hanger / support / anchor problem

Rough searches: trapeze falling · all-thread too short · strut spinning · rod backing out

Proper lane: Hanger or anchor problem — treat support failure as overhead hazard

Check first: Secure the area if anything is loose, slipping, bowing, or loaded wrong

Stop / ask: Do not hang more duct from a slipping/bowed/torn support, drill through rebar or unknown structure, share hangers with other trades, or relocate supports without direction.

Damper / access / rated assembly

Rough searches: pookie in the track · mastic in the sleeve · can’t see the blade

Proper lane: Fire/smoke damper or access problem — stop before covering or altering it

Check first: Identify the device: fire damper, smoke damper, volume damper, opposed blade damper, backdraft damper, louver, or access door

Stop / ask: Do not cover a damper/access door, remove/bend a fusible link, screw through blades, bury a handle, or modify rated work without approved direction.

Flex / boot / bend radius problem

Rough searches: flex is saggy · drooping flex · flex bunched up · accordion flex

Proper lane: Flex is pulling, kinked, or damaging the boot — fix route and support before final tie-in

Check first: Check bend radius, sag, support spacing, inner liner stretch, draw band, and collar seating

Stop / ask: Do not leave flex kinked, pulled tight, cut by strap, unsupported by the boot, or stretched into place just to make the diffuser look close.

Sealants / mastic / product verification

Rough searches: pookie · goop · sticky stuff · bucket skinned over · wrong caulk

Proper lane: Pookie, goop, or mastic — identify the sealant before using it

Check first: Read the bucket/tube label and product data if available

Stop / ask: Do not substitute random caulk, silicone, old mastic, or black sealant on rated/grease/exhaust work without approved direction.

Grease duct / kitchen exhaust life-safety lane

Rough searches: black death · kitchen hood duct · grease duct leaking · Type I hood

Proper lane: Grease duct or kitchen exhaust slang — treat it as life-safety work

Check first: Identify whether it is Type I grease exhaust, Type II heat/moisture exhaust, or a different system

Stop / ask: Do not substitute sealant, bury access, ignore slope/low points, cut/modify, or cover grease/kitchen exhaust work without foreman/project/AHJ verification.

Fitting names / connection vocabulary

Rough searches: dog leg · cheater elbow · saddle tap · spin-in · raw edge

Proper lane: Fitting slang — translate the nickname before cutting or installing

Check first: Identify the fitting shape, airflow direction, connection type, and system type

Stop / ask: Do not cut, install, or substitute a cheater fitting, tap, or seam in rated/grease/high-pressure work just because the nickname sounds familiar.

Renovation / existing conditions / unknown duct

Rough searches: existing duct · tie into old system · asbestos wrap · mystery duct

Proper lane: Existing, mystery, or abandoned duct — verify before cutting or tying in

Check first: Confirm scope: remain, demo, abandon, or tie-in

Stop / ask: Do not cut, demo, tie into, or disturb existing duct, mystery duct, asbestos-looking wrap, or unknown material without foreman/abatement/project verification.

Airflow / pressure / noise symptom

Rough searches: duct singing · oil canning · no air coming out · drafty ceiling

Proper lane: Duct singing, booming, breathing, or no air — translate the symptom first

Check first: Confirm the unit/fan is actually running and in the right mode

Stop / ask: Do not randomly adjust balancing dampers, move diffusers, modify duct, or change equipment settings during startup without foreman direction.

Seismic restraint / bracing slang

Rough searches: earthquake strap · sway brace · four-way brace · seismic not on drawing

Proper lane: Earthquake strap or sway brace — seismic is not a guesswork item

Check first: Check approved drawings, seismic notes, details, spec, hanger/bracing layout, attachment points, and engineer/foreman direction

Stop / ask: Do not skip, substitute, loosen, or improvise seismic restraint to make the duct run easier.

Leakage / pressure testing slang

Rough searches: pressure test · duct blaster · smoke test · soap bubbles · failed test

Proper lane: Pressure test, duct blaster, smoke test, or soap bubbles — know what the spec actually requires

Check first: Confirm whether a formal leakage test is required

Stop / ask: Do not call a system passed because it “looks sealed,” skip documentation, or use informal soap/smoke checks as a substitute for a required test.

Tool slang / right tool for task

Rough searches: zip screw · tek screw · bull pin · cheater bar · BFH · dead blow

Proper lane: Tool slang — make sure you are grabbing the right tool, not forcing the job

Check first: Confirm the fastener/tool matches the task and material

Stop / ask: Do not use a cheater bar, BFH, chain fall, or wrong screw to make bad layout or wrong material fit. Forced fits hide problems and create failures.

Diffuser / grille / boot / air device

Rough searches: crooked diffuser · grille neck too small · ceiling grid holding diffuser

Proper lane: Diffuser, grille, or air device does not sit or throw right — check support, neck, and airflow path

Check first: Check boot/register support independent of the ceiling grid where required

Stop / ask: Do not let the grid carry unsupported duct/boot weight, force a wrong neck onto flex, bury an airflow issue, or adjust TAB-related devices without direction.

RTU / curb / equipment opening alignment

Rough searches: RTU drop doesn’t line up · curb openings crossed · rotted nailer

Proper lane: RTU drop or curb does not line up — verify openings before connecting

Check first: Compare curb, adapter, unit base, supply/return openings, and duct drop to approved drawings/submittal

Stop / ask: Do not cut the curb or unit base, swap supply/return, seal over rotten nailer, or force a duct drop to fit without approved direction.

Startup / high static / vibration handoff

Rough searches: high static popping joints · blower rubs · belt riding over pulley

Proper lane: Startup vibration, high static, or equipment drive issue — document install side and escalate

Check first: Document location, equipment tag, visible duct/joint/canvas condition, vibration path, and when it happens

Stop / ask: Do not adjust sheaves, belts, set screws, electrical/control wiring, motor rotation, or equipment internals unless you are assigned/qualified and directed under proper lockout/tagout and company procedure.

Equipment level / condensate drainage

Rough searches: package unit out of level · pan slopes away from drain

Proper lane: Package unit or condensate pan slopes wrong — verify level, drainage, and support

Check first: Check unit level, curb/support condition, roof pitch, drain side, pan slope, and condensate line route

Stop / ask: Do not shim, force duct, reroute drain, or ignore out-of-level equipment without foreman/manufacturer/project direction.

Print / spec / revision / schedule conflict

Rough searches: drawing looks wrong · revisions don’t match · schedule missing VAV

Proper lane: Drawing looks wrong — separate field condition from document conflict

Check first: Identify the exact sheet/detail/revision/spec/submittal/schedule that conflicts

Stop / ask: Do not pick the drawing you like, change pressure class/material/elevation, ignore inspector comments, or build from an old revision without confirmation.

Other trade conflict / damage / blocked opening

Rough searches: drywaller screwed duct · tile covered return · electrician tied to hanger

Proper lane: Other trade damaged, blocked, or moved your work — document before touching

Check first: Take clear photos showing location, damage/blockage, and nearby reference points

Stop / ask: Do not quietly fix other-trade damage, share hangers, cut framing, uncover rated work, or take blame without documenting and telling the foreman.

Insulation / liner / wrap issue

Rough searches: liner falling off · gripnails pulling out · shiny side wrong way

Proper lane: Liner, wrap, or insulation is loose/damaged — verify spec before closing it up

Check first: Identify material: internal liner, external wrap, vapor barrier, acoustic wrap, fire wrap, or flex jacket

Stop / ask: Do not cover loose liner/wrap, leave insulation where it can enter the airstream, substitute material, or patch fire/rated wrap without approved direction.
