Floor Openings Do Not Line Up Through the Riser

STOP AND ASK

Fast answer

Establish the actual opening locations from durable control points on each floor before fabricating offsets or forcing the riser. Determine whether the error is in the openings, sleeves, layout, or current route.

What to check

  1. Measure each opening from the same column lines or building controls.
  2. Record floor elevation and opening size.
  3. Check the latest structural and mechanical drawings.
  4. Photograph the vertical relationship and identify framing or rated-assembly limits.

Do not

Do not chain measurements floor to floor, enlarge an opening, or field-build a riser offset without approval.

Ask the foreman

“I measured the riser openings from the same grid lines on three floors, and the middle opening is shifted. Can we verify whether the opening, sleeve, or duct route is being corrected before I release an offset?”

Why it matters

A quick field offset may hide a building-layout problem, create an inaccessible joint, or conflict with structural and rated assemblies.
