Why can wedge anchors crack a CMU louver opening

3rd YearForeman Skills & Jobsite ProductivityCheck first

Expansion anchors can blow out weak masonry near edges. Stop using that anchor point and switch to the approved anchor type and edge distance for the substrate.

Plain-English answer

Masonry edges can break when an expansion anchor is too close to a rough opening. Once the block face cracks, the anchor may look tight but no longer has a safe grip.

Back out of the cracked zone, document the damage, and use the anchor method called out for the wall condition. That may mean non-expansion masonry screws, epoxy anchors, backing steel, or a repaired opening depending on the structural/envelope detail.

Ask Foreman

The louver anchor at [location] cracked the CMU edge and lost bite. I checked the substrate and edge distance. Do you want a non-expansion/epoxy anchor detail or wall repair before resetting?
