Why did the gasket get shaved off a spiral slip joint

A torn gasket is an invisible leak. Pull the joint apart, smooth the pipe edge, replace the gasket, and reassemble by the manufacturer method.

Plain-English answer

Factory-gasketed spiral systems depend on that seal staying intact inside the joint. A raw field-cut edge can shave the gasket before anybody sees the problem.

Do not rely on the joint just because it slid together. Pull it back, deburr/chamfer the cut edge, replace the damaged gasket, use approved lubricant if required, and verify full engagement before fastening.

Ask Foreman

The gasketed spiral joint at [location] got shaved by a raw cut edge. I pulled it apart and found damaged gasket material. Do you want a fresh gasket and deburred edge before we reseal?
