CONTENT GAP BATCH 13
Fitting Orientation & Field Verification
These routes cover mirrored and rotated fittings, branch clocking, final-connection planning, connector mismatches, joint access, field modifications, and clear shop-remake information.
Compare the offset to the airflow direction, plan view, elevation, and the direction you will be looking before it leaves the ground. A fitting can have the right rise and run and still be mirrored.
Fitting Orientation & Field VerificationTransition Rotation: Confirm Top, Bottom, and Flat Side Before It Goes UpVERIFYA transition can match both end sizes and still be clocked wrong. Mark top, bottom, airflow direction, and any flat side that must hold elevation or clear structure before installation.
Fitting Orientation & Field VerificationRound Branch Clocking: Mark the Tap Direction Before Cutting the MainVERIFYClock the branch from a stable building reference and the actual downstream route before cutting. A branch can be the right size and location but point into structure or another trade.
Fitting Orientation & Field VerificationField-Verify Throat, Heel, Centerline, Rise, and Run Before Releasing a FittingPROCEED WITH CHECKSRecord the fitting from clear control points and identify exactly which dimension is throat, heel, centerline, rise, run, and straight length. The shop should not have to guess how your field numbers relate to the fitting.
Fitting Orientation & Field VerificationPlan the Final Connection Before the Run Becomes an Impossible Last JointVERIFYChoose the final connection while there is still room to move, align, and install the joint hardware. The last opening in a run needs an insertion path and tool access, not just matching dimensions.
Fitting Orientation & Field VerificationFitting Will Not Rotate Into Place: Check the Insertion Envelope Before Modifying ItVERIFYA fitting needs room for its full swing, not just its final installed footprint. Check the rotation path, connector projection, reinforcement, and nearby work before cutting or flattening anything.
Fitting Orientation & Field VerificationRaw Edge, Slip, Collar, or Flange: Connector Ends Do Not MatchVERIFYStop and identify what connector each end was supposed to receive. Two correct duct sizes do not make a usable joint when the end treatments are incompatible.
Fitting Orientation & Field VerificationJoint Against a Wall or Beam: Verify Hardware and Tool Access Before Hanging ItVERIFYA joint location is not workable unless the crew can install and inspect its gasket, corners, bolts, cleats, drives, screws, clamps, and sealant as required.
Fitting Orientation & Field VerificationBranch Weight Is Pulling the Main Out of SquareVERIFYSupport the branch so its weight and leverage are not twisting the tap, collar, or main duct. Re-square the main before final tightening and sealing.
Fitting Orientation & Field VerificationField Modification Crosses Reinforcement or an Internal ComponentSTOP AND ASKStop before cutting. Identify the reinforcement, turning vane, tie rod, damper, liner system, sensor, or other internal component and verify an approved modification or replacement.
Fitting Orientation & Field VerificationReplacement Fitting Sketch: Prevent a Second Mirrored or Rotated RemakePROCEED WITH CHECKSSketch the replacement from a named viewing direction and mark airflow, top, upstream, downstream, connector types, control points, and fitting movement. Make it impossible to read the sketch from the opposite side.
Fitting Orientation & Field VerificationReducer or Transition Installed Backward: Verify Airflow and End Sizes Before Final ConnectionVERIFYConfirm upstream and downstream, both end sizes, and the intended system direction before final connection. A fitting that physically connects can still be backward.
