Finished or Painted Spiral Duct Was Scratched During Installation

VERIFY FIRST

Fast answer

Protect the damaged area and verify the approved finish-repair method before touching it up. The right repair depends on the coating, color, gloss, surface preparation, and architectural acceptance standard.

What to check

  1. Photograph the scratch before cleaning or repair.
  2. Identify whether the duct is factory finished, field painted, coated, or bare metal.
  3. Check the finish schedule, manufacturer instructions, and project touch-up procedure.
  4. Protect nearby finished duct from clamps, chains, lift rails, and dirty gloves.

Do not

Do not use a random spray paint, marker, abrasive pad, or solvent on architectural duct.

Ask the foreman

“This exposed spiral was scratched during the raise. I documented it and checked the finish schedule, but I do not see a touch-up product listed. Do you want the approved repair method confirmed before we work on it?”

Why it matters

A small repair with the wrong product can look worse than the original damage and may void the finish system.
