Stabilize Round Duct Before Starting Screws or Clamps
VERIFYFast answer
Block, cradle, strap, or otherwise stabilize the round section using the crew’s approved method before starting screws or clamps. The joint should not roll or rotate while hands and tools are on it.
What to check
- Set the section so it cannot roll off the lift, cart, horses, or temporary support.
- Align insertion depth and seam orientation before the first fastener.
- Keep the branch, elbow, or fitting from twisting the main while the joint is started.
- Verify permanent support before removing the stabilizing method.
Do not
Do not hold a rolling section with one hand while drilling with the other, and do not rely on the first screw to carry or stabilize the joint.
Ask the foreman
“This elbow wants to rotate while we start the joint. Where do you want it blocked or supported so we can fasten it without loading the first screw?”
Why it matters
Unstable round duct can roll, spin, tear a gasket, distort the joint, or pull the first fastener out of position.
