Protect Installed Duct From Fireproofing, Paint, Concrete, and Drywall Work

VERIFY

Fast answer

Cover or isolate installed duct and openings using the project-approved protection method before nearby spray, grinding, painting, concrete, or drywall work begins. Keep access, labels, and required inspections visible.

What to check

  1. Identify exposed duct surfaces, open ends, dampers, sensors, and equipment connections in the work zone.
  2. Coordinate what protection is allowed and who removes it after the adjacent work.
  3. Seal temporary covers so debris cannot enter without damaging finishes or vapor barriers.
  4. Inspect and document the duct after the other trade finishes.

Do not

Do not let fireproofing, paint, concrete slurry, drywall dust, or grinding debris enter the duct or cover access labels and moving parts.

Ask the foreman

“The fireproofing crew starts above this open main tomorrow. What protection do you want installed, and who is responsible for removing and inspecting it afterward?”

Why it matters

Overspray and debris can contaminate the system, damage finishes, hide labels, and lock up dampers or accessories.
