Do Not Use Installed Duct as a Step, Shelf, or Support for Other Work

VERIFY

Fast answer

Installed duct, fittings, taps, access doors, and hangers are not general work platforms or storage racks. Protect the system and provide the correct access or support for the task.

What to check

  1. Remove stored material, cords, pipe, tools, and debris from the duct without damaging it.
  2. Inspect panels, joints, hangers, insulation, and accessories for deformation or damage.
  3. Document repeated loading or visible damage before it is covered.
  4. Coordinate proper access and material storage with the responsible crew.

Do not

Do not stand, kneel, sit, climb, or store material on ductwork unless a specifically designed and approved platform says otherwise.

Ask the foreman

“Other trades have been using this main as a shelf and one panel is oil-canning. Do you want it unloaded, documented, and inspected before ceiling close-in?”

Why it matters

Unplanned loading can dent panels, open joints, crush insulation, damage accessories, and overload supports.
