A required access door, damper, panel, or service space is blocked. What do I do?

Fire/Smoke Dampers, Rated Assemblies & Accessred

Treat blocked access as a hold point, especially around dampers, VAVs, controls, cleanouts, filters, coils, valves, and anything inspectable or serviceable. Document it and ask before covering or working around it.

Ask foreman

The required access at [location] is blocked by [framing/pipe/grid/insulation]. It affects [damper/service/TAB/cleanout]. Do you want me to hold, get the trade moved, or create an approved access plan?

Do not

Do not hide blocked access behind tile, insulation, drywall, paint, or “we can probably reach it later.”

Why it matters

Blocked access creates failed inspections, service callbacks, destructive rework, and life-safety issues.
