When You Don't Know the Fitting Name
Use when you are staring at a part and do not know what to call it.
You need to ask for a fitting/tool/material but do not know the correct trade name.
Stop if
- Ask when the part affects airflow, access, connection type, damper operation, grease/rated duct, or equipment connection.
Watch out
- Do not grab a random fitting because it looks close.
- Do not call every connector a 'flange' or every round fitting a 'collar.'
- Do not cut the wrong part to make it fit.
- Do not be embarrassed - naming parts is a real apprentice skill.
Check
- Whole fitting
- Connection side
- Size/tag
- Where it needs to install
Steps
- Describe function, shape, connection type, size, and where it goes.
- Say what shape it is: rectangular, round, spiral, oval, flex, transition, offset, elbow, tap, boot, collar, damper, access door.
- Say what it connects: duct-to-duct, duct-to-equipment, duct-to-diffuser, duct-to-wall/roof, branch-to-main.
- Say connection type: S-and-drive, TDC/Ductmate/flange, slip/coupler, flex collar, gasketed, welded, access door.
- Give dimensions and airflow direction if known.
- Take a photo and point at the specific edge/connection/part.
- Ask using function if you do not know the name.
