What should I check before touching slings, shackles, hooks, or rigging gear?
Rigging gear is qualified-person territory. If the rigging crew no-shows, watching lifts before does not make you the rigger.
Stop if
- I have watched picks, but I am not the assigned qualified rigger. Who is the qualified person taking responsibility for rigging this load?
Watch out
- Do not hook up an RTU, choose pick points, size rigging, or improvise a lift because the crane is waiting.
Check
- State clearly that you are not qualified/assigned to rig the load.
- Keep the crane/pick held until a qualified rigger/lift lead is present.
- Ask the foreman to contact the PM/superintendent/lift lead for direction.
- Document the hold if pressure continues.
