What do I do before insulating or covering an S-and-drive joint?
Inspect the mechanical joint first, then seal it with the approved material if the job requires sealing. Do not let insulation, ceiling, or wall cover an open or uninspected joint.
Make the joint mechanically right before sealing or covering it. Sealant is not a substitute for a loose or dirty joint.
Ask when seal class/material is unclear, access is about to be blocked, or the joint still has gaps after mechanical fit-up.
Watch out
Do not seal over gaps, dirt, oil, water, or a loose joint.
Check
Confirm the joint is tight
Clean dirt/oil/water from the seal area
Use the approved seal method
Steps
Check S/slip seating, drive seating, corners, tabs, and sharp edges.
Clean surfaces where sealant/tape/mastic will go.
Apply only approved sealant method.
Keep labels/access/dampers clear.
Take a photo before cover-up if the area will become hard to access.
