What do I do before connecting a section that might be facing the wrong way?

Verify piece mark, system, size, airflow direction, and branch/opening direction before locking the joint. Stopping before seal and insulation saves major rework.

Stop before the duct gets damaged. A duct end that is out of square, rotated, or oil-canning is usually telling you the piece or alignment is wrong.

Ask when the duct has branches, access doors, dampers, transitions, offsets, or any fitting that only works one way.

Watch out

Do not force the duct until it buckles or locks in wrong.

Verify orientation
Check squareness and cross-break direction
Confirm the piece belongs in that spot

Steps

Check duct tag/piece mark.
Confirm branch, tap, access door, and damper direction.
Look at what the next piece needs.
Compare to latest drawing/shop drawing.
Ask if the orientation is unclear.
