Seismic bracing crosses my round duct route
Do not cut, loosen, or move seismic bracing to make your duct fit. Verify the brace, measure the conflict, and offset/reroute the duct only by an approved method.
['Seismic cables, strut braces, and guy wires are not obstacles to casually move. They are part of the support system for equipment, pipe, duct, or structure.', 'The sheet metal recovery is usually to adjust your duct route around the brace, not modify the brace. Check whether a smooth offset, alternate elevation, revised hanger, or coordination detail is needed, and keep clearance so the systems do not rub or transfer vibration.']
Stop if
- Use this as training guidance. The foreman, approved drawings, project specs, manufacturer installation instructions, employer safety policy, and AHJ/code requirements always control the final answer.
Check
- Changing seismic bracing can create a safety/inspection failure and put responsibility on the wrong trade.
Steps
- Identify whether the crossing item is seismic bracing, hanger support, pipe support, or temporary work.
- Measure the clearance and exact crossing point.
- Check whether your duct can offset, change elevation, or shift without hurting airflow/access.
- Check for metal-on-metal contact, chafing, and future movement.
- Ask before touching any seismic or structural brace.
