Not understanding the difference between 2-pipe and 4-pipe fan coil systems

A 2-pipe system shares supply and return piping for heating and cooling - it can only heat or cool at one time. A 4-pipe system has separate circuits and can heat and cool simultaneously. The difference affects your piping connections completely.
