Mastic peels off oily factory metal
Sealant will not bond to oil, water, or dust. Clean and dry the joint first, then reapply mastic to a mechanically closed seam.
Stop if
- The mastic is peeling right off because of the slick factory protective stamping oil. Grab some alcohol rags, wipe the flange rim dry and clean, and then re-brush your bucket seal.
Watch out
- Do not brush sealant over slick factory oil and expect it to stick.
Check
- Look for oily sheen, dust, or condensation on the metal.
- Wipe with approved cleaner/rag per site practice.
- Let the joint dry before sealing.
- Reapply a clean, even coat.
- Check adhesion before covering or testing.
