I am holding a mechanical plan and do not know how to orient it

Start at the document level before reading duct. Find the sheet title, floor/area, north arrow, gridlines, scale, legend, plan view, and whether you are on the latest revision.

Stop if

• I'm on sheet [sheet number] for [area]. Can you show me the grid/north/reference point before I measure from this plan?

Watch out

• Do not measure from a folded/rotated/old sheet when you are not sure what area or revision you are using.

Check

• Open the sheet so the title block is readable.
• Find sheet number/title and floor/area.
• Find north arrow and gridlines.
• Locate the room/area first, then duct tags.
• Check revision/date/clouds before measuring from it.
