Fire damper retaining angles are pre-attached too tight
Fire damper retaining angles and sleeve details must match the listed installation. Do not pin the damper assembly in a bind; verify the approved clearance/angle detail before fastening.
Stop if
- Don't slam those retaining angles tight against the frame. Code says we must have an eighth-inch expansion gap all around so the sleeve doesn't buckle and jam the fire blades if a fire breaks out.
Watch out
- Do not invent fire damper clearances or tighten angles hard against the frame because it looks cleaner.
Check
- Read the damper label and installation sheet.
- Confirm retaining angle location and fastener pattern.
- Check that the sleeve/frame is not pinched or bound.
- Use the approved spacer/detail if required.
- Have the foreman verify before it is covered.
