Apprentice Q&A · #360Why is an adjustable 45-degree elbow leaking at the gore seam?
2nd YearGREEN · Standard CorrectionAdjustable Gore Leak
Short answer
The gore segment may not be fully seated in its swage track. Reset the elbow mechanically first, then fasten and seal it.
Field answer
Adjustable elbows seal only when the gore segments are nested correctly. If one segment is sitting proud or off its track, the seam can leave a jagged gap that leaks under pressure.
Loosen any lock screws, rotate the gore back into position, check the throat is round/open, then fasten and seal. If the seam is bent or cracked, replace the fitting instead of hiding it with sealant.
What to check first
- Look for a raised or misnested gore segment.
- Check if the elbow angle shifted during install.
- Reset the gore into its track before sealing.
- Fasten the seam after the fitting holds shape.
- Seal the corrected seam per pressure class/shop standard.
Do not do this
Do not smear mastic over a misaligned gore seam without fixing the mechanical seating first.
Why it matters
Misnested gores leak, whistle, and can move again when the fan starts.
Ask foreman
The adjustable 45 at [location] is leaking because one gore segment is not seated in its track. I can reset and fasten it, or replace it if the seam is damaged. Which do you want?
