Why is shower or locker exhaust leaking water through spiral duct seams?

3rd YearYELLOW · Check FirstCondensation / Exhaust

Short answer

Moist exhaust in cold space needs condensation control. Seal the system and insulate/wrap it by the approved vapor-barrier detail.

Field answer

Warm humid exhaust can condense when the pipe skin is cold. Water then follows seams and pinholes until it finds drywall.

Check whether the run is pitched, insulated, sealed, and routed correctly. Dry the area, repair leaks, add approved vapor-barrier insulation or condensation control, and confirm the moisture source is handled.

What to check first

Do not do this

Do not treat condensation leaks as just a few pinholes if the duct is sweating along the run.

Why it matters

Condensation can damage ceilings, cause mold complaints, and corrode duct from the inside out.

Ask foreman

The spiral exhaust at [location] is dripping through seams in a cold space. I checked moisture source and insulation. Do you want seams sealed and the run wrapped per vapor-barrier detail?
