Why does a round saddle tap whistle after install?

2nd YearGREEN · Standard CorrectionSaddle Taps / Airflow

Short answer

Remove the tap and open the hole to the proper internal shape. A raw lip inside the tap is an airflow restriction, not a noise you just seal over.

Field answer

If the hole under a saddle tap is smaller than the collar, air hits a sharp lip and whistles. It can also reduce branch airflow before the balancer ever shows up.

Pull the saddle, trim the opening to the actual tap throat, smooth the edge, reset with gasket/sealant, and fasten evenly so the saddle sits tight to the barrel.

What to check first

Do not do this

Do not leave a half-blocked branch takeoff and blame the air balancer.

Why it matters

A restricted saddle tap can create noise, low airflow, and a failed TAB reading.

Ask foreman

The saddle tap at [location] is whistling and the opening looks undersized. I pulled/checked the tap. Do you want the hole opened to the full throat and reset clean?
