Answer

Overtightening a ring hanger can ovalize round duct, crush double-wall insulation, and create airflow/acoustic problems.

Back off the ring, inspect the shell, verify insulation is not crushed, and reset the support with the approved snug fit. Replace damaged sections if the duct no longer holds shape.

Field checks

Ask foreman

The split ring at [location] is squeezing the round duct out of shape. I checked the shell/insulation. Do you want it reset or the damaged section replaced?

Text this

Do not do this

Do not tighten a ring hanger until the pipe becomes the clamp shape.

Why this matters

Crushed round duct can restrict airflow, add noise, damage insulation, and throw off fit-up.
