Why is it bad to hang a main duct in front of an AHU coil access door?
3rd YearMechanical Room CoordinationRED · Stop and Get Direction
Equipment needs real service and coil pull access. If a duct blocks the removal lane, hold the run and coordinate a layout shift before it becomes future demolition.
A main duct can be installed perfectly and still be wrong if it blocks the AHU coil door or pull path. Maintenance access is part of the installation, not an afterthought.
Check the equipment submittal for service clearances and coil removal direction. If the duct blocks the lane, stop and coordinate offsetting, lowering, shifting, or rerouting before the run is fully built and insulated.
Field checklist
Open or simulate opening the access door before final duct location is locked in.
Check coil pull direction and service clearance on submittals.
Measure actual clearance from duct to cabinet/service side.
Coordinate with foreman/detailer/GC if the duct line blocks removal.
Document the fix before insulation/ceiling close.
Ask Foreman
The duct layout at [AHU/tag] blocks the coil/access removal lane. I checked the submittal/service side. Do you want the run lowered, offset, or held for coordination?
Use this as training guidance. The foreman, approved drawings, project specs, manufacturer installation instructions, employer safety policy, and AHJ/code requirements always control the final answer.
