Why does smoke exhaust equipment need manufacturer clearance to combustibles?
4th YearSmoke Exhaust / Jet FansRED · Stop and Get Direction
Smoke/heat exhaust equipment must maintain the listed clearance around hot equipment. Hold the install and verify the nameplate/submittal before lowering, shifting, or coordinating removal of combustible material.
Smoke evacuation equipment may operate in extreme heat during an emergency. If it is too close to combustible construction, that is not a normal “make it fit” problem.
Check the equipment nameplate, submittal, approved layout, and nearby materials. Hold the install if clearance is not met. Recovery may mean lowering/relocating the fan, revising supports, or having the GC move combustible framing outside the listed clearance.
Field checklist
Stop before energizing or covering the conflict.
Verify equipment tag, listing/nameplate, and clearance requirement.
Identify nearby combustible or heat-sensitive materials.
Measure actual clearance and document with photos.
Coordinate relocation or material removal before acceptance.
Ask Foreman
The smoke exhaust fan at [location] is too close to combustible framing. I checked the nameplate/submittal clearance. Do you want the fan lowered/shifted or the framing moved before we continue?
Use this as training guidance. The foreman, approved drawings, project specs, manufacturer installation instructions, employer safety policy, and AHJ/code requirements always control the final answer.
