Why is duct mastic peeling off oily or wet metal?

1st YearSealing / LeakageGREEN · Standard Correction

Mastic needs a clean, dry surface. Remove oil/moisture/loose dirt, let the metal dry, then reseal with the approved product and thickness/detail.

Plain-English answer

If mastic slides off, peels, or beads up, the problem is usually surface prep. Factory oil, condensation, dust, wet insulation, or cold wet roof conditions can keep sealant from bonding.

The field fix is to clean and dry the metal using approved jobsite cleaning methods, remove failed sealant, and reseal per the product/project requirements. If the duct keeps sweating, solve the condensation/vapor barrier issue too.

Ask Foreman

The mastic at [location] is peeling because the metal is oily/wet. I checked surface prep and condensation. Do you want the joint cleaned/dried and resealed with the approved sealant, and should insulation/vapor barrier be corrected too?
