Fire damper retaining angles are part of a listed install detail. If they are fastened to the wrong thing, stop and verify the manufacturer/listing before cover or inspection.
Retaining angles are not decorative trim. They are installed a specific way so the damper sleeve and rated assembly can perform as intended. If they are screwed into wall framing or pinned rigid in the wrong way, the damper frame/sleeve can bind or fail inspection.
Do not rely on memory. Check the exact damper installation sheet, wall type, sleeve type, and listed detail. The likely correction is removing wrong fasteners and reinstalling the angles only where the approved instructions allow.
Use this as training guidance. The foreman, approved drawings, project specs, manufacturer installation instructions, employer safety policy, and AHJ/code requirements always control the final answer.
