What do I do if another trade ties cable to my duct hangers?
2nd YearHangers / SupportsYELLOW · Check First
Duct hangers are for the duct system, not another trade’s cable tray. Document it and coordinate removal before your support system gets overloaded, rattles, or fails inspection.
When other trades zip-tie cable bundles, pipe, or random support loads to your trapeze or hanger rods, they change the load path and responsibility. Your duct supports may no longer match the intended support detail.
Do not cut their work down yourself unless directed, but do not ignore it either. Get photos, identify the trade, show the affected supports, and have the foreman coordinate independent supports for their work.
Field checklist
Photo the exact hanger/trapeze being used by another trade.
Check whether the added load is pulling rods, bending strut, compressing insulation, or contacting duct.
Check if seismic bracing, access, or inspection visibility is affected.
Identify the trade and location clearly for coordination.
Ask before removing or moving another trade’s installed work.
Ask Foreman
Another trade tied cable/pipe onto our duct trapeze at [location]. I checked for bending/contact and took photos. Do you want me to have them remove it through coordination, or do we need to document it for the GC?
Use this as training guidance. The foreman, approved drawings, project specs, manufacturer installation instructions, employer safety policy, and AHJ/code requirements always control the final answer.
