How do I verify fire/smoke damper orientation before cover?
2nd YearFire/Smoke DampersRED · Stop / Verify
Treat a reversed or upside-down fire/smoke damper as a stop-and-correct condition. Verify the label, airflow arrow, top/bottom orientation, actuator/access side, sleeve detail, and manufacturer instructions before cover.
Fire and smoke dampers are life-safety devices, not normal sheet metal fittings. If the airflow arrow, top/bottom label, actuator side, blade orientation, or sleeve/access orientation is wrong, the damper may not operate or pass inspection.
The usual recovery is to stop, photograph the label/orientation, pull or reposition the damper as directed, and reinstall per the manufacturer label, approved submittal, and rated assembly detail.
Field checklist
Find and read the damper label before the wall or ceiling closes.
Confirm the opening/wall type matches the approved detail and submittal.
Make sure access remains reachable after finish work.
Call for direction before modifying, flipping, drilling, or forcing any life-safety device.
Ask Foreman
The FSD at [location] appears [backwards/upside down/wrong airflow direction]. I checked the label, access side, and sleeve. Do you want it pulled and reinstalled per the approved damper detail before cover?
Use this as training guidance. The foreman, approved drawings, project specs, manufacturer installation instructions, employer safety policy, and AHJ/code requirements always control the final answer.
