Pre-Fire-Damper Inspection Walk

Use before AHJ/fire damper inspection to check access, labels, blade path, and corrections.

What this covers

Fire/smoke/combination damper inspection is scheduled or ceiling/wall closure is close.

How to use this playbook

  1. Walk each damper location like the inspector will ask to see it open, visible, and documented.
  2. List each damper by room/grid/tag.
  3. Verify access panel exists, opens, and is large enough to inspect/service.
  4. Confirm UL/listing label and damper ID are visible and not covered.
  5. Check actuator/handle/control side clearance.
  6. Check blade path for screws, liner, insulation, debris, or duct edges.
  7. Photo and assign owner for each not-ready item.

Check

  • Damper label
  • Access open/closed
  • Blade path concern
  • Wide room/grid

Warnings

  • Do not cover or close ceiling over unknown damper access.
  • Do not force painted/seized access doors without direction.
  • Do not claim corrected without photos/recheck if inspection is involved.

Stop and ask

  • Ask when access, label, actuator, blade path, sleeve, retaining angle, or correction owner is unclear.
