Lift Day Checklist

One-page crew awareness checklist before crane/RTU/equipment picks.

First move

Know who is in charge of the lift and where apprentices are allowed to stand before the pick starts.

Use when

A crane pick, RTU set, curb adapter, large duct lift, or other equipment pick is coming and apprentices need to know where to stand and what not to touch.

Field steps

  1. Confirm lift lead, signal person, exclusion zone, staging path, tag-line plan, and radio/hand-signal rules.
  2. Know whether apprentices are observers, runners, tag-line helpers, or staying clear.
  3. Walk the roof/floor path for trip hazards, open edges, overhead power, skylights, and material clutter.
  4. Keep hands off rigging unless assigned and trained.
  5. Stop and ask if you do not know your role.

Do not

  • Do not stand under the load.
  • Do not grab rigging, hooks, slings, or tag lines unless assigned and trained.
  • Do not walk into the exclusion zone because you are curious.
  • Do not assume watching one lift makes you a rigger.

Ask when

Ask before lift day starts if your role, standing area, signal person, or exclusion zone is unclear.
