Before you start

  • Confirm the approved support detail, actual duct weight, support spacing, attachment substrate, hardware size, corrosion protection, and any insulation, seismic, vibration, or rooftop requirements before installation.
  • Confirm the band diameter matches the duct and the rod, anchor, nuts, and washers match the approved load.
  • Inspect the split ring, hinge, latch, rod threads, and hardware for damage.
  • Check that the band will support the duct body without landing on a joint.

Tools and materials

Approved split-ring or band hanger, threaded rod, structural anchor, nuts and washers, level, tape, lift, wrench set, gloves, and isolation material where specified.

Lay it out

  1. Mark the overhead anchor and duct support point.
  2. Keep the rod plumb unless the approved detail shows otherwise.
  3. Place the band clear of slip joints, fittings, and dampers.

Set and support it

  1. Install the approved anchor and threaded rod.
  2. Open and position the band around the duct.
  3. Support the duct during band adjustment.

Make the connection

  1. 1

Raise the duct to approximate elevation.

  2. 2

Close the band around the duct body.

  3. 3

Connect the band to the threaded rod with the specified hardware.

  4. 4

Adjust the nut to final elevation.

  5. 5

Tighten the band only enough to support the duct without flattening it.

  6. 6

    Set locknuts or locking hardware.

  7. 7

Release the lift and verify the rod remains plumb.

Check the install

  • The band diameter matches the duct.
  • The rod is plumb and hardware is locked.
  • The duct remains round and centered.
  • The hanger does not bear on a joint.
  • No thread or hardware damage is present.

Common mistakes

  • Using an oversized band and trying to close the gap with the bolt.
  • Pinching the duct by overtightening.
  • Leaving the locknut loose.
  • Installing the rod at an angle and side-loading the anchor.

Stop and ask

Stop if the band diameter, rod, anchor, load, or support location does not match the approved detail.
