Before you start
- Confirm the approved support detail, actual duct weight, support spacing, attachment substrate, hardware size, corrosion protection, and any insulation, seismic, vibration, or rooftop requirements before installation.
- Confirm the band diameter matches the duct and the rod, anchor, nuts, and washers match the approved load.
- Inspect the split ring, hinge, latch, rod threads, and hardware for damage.
- Check that the band will support the duct body without landing on a joint.
Tools and materials
Approved split-ring or band hanger, threaded rod, structural anchor, nuts and washers, level, tape, lift, wrench set, gloves, and isolation material where specified.
Lay it out
- Mark the overhead anchor and duct support point.
- Keep the rod plumb unless the approved detail shows otherwise.
- Place the band clear of slip joints, fittings, and dampers.
Set and support it
- Install the approved anchor and threaded rod.
- Open and position the band around the duct.
- Support the duct during band adjustment.
Make the connection
- 1
Raise the duct to approximate elevation.
- 2
Close the band around the duct body.
- 3
Connect the band to the threaded rod with the specified hardware.
- 4
Adjust the nut to final elevation.
- 5
Tighten the band only enough to support the duct without flattening it.
- 6
Set locknuts or locking hardware.
- 7
Release the lift and verify the rod remains plumb.
Check the install
- The band diameter matches the duct.
- The rod is plumb and hardware is locked.
- The duct remains round and centered.
- The hanger does not bear on a joint.
- No thread or hardware damage is present.
Common mistakes
- Using an oversized band and trying to close the gap with the bolt.
- Pinching the duct by overtightening.
- Leaving the locknut loose.
- Installing the rod at an angle and side-loading the anchor.
Stop and ask
Stop if the band diameter, rod, anchor, load, or support location does not match the approved detail.
