Hanger strap around round duct

Light horizontal run

Before you start

  • Confirm the approved support detail, actual duct weight, support spacing, attachment substrate, hardware size, corrosion protection, and any insulation, seismic, vibration, or rooftop requirements before installation.
  • Verify the duct diameter and weight are within the approved strap-hanger method.
  • Inspect the strap for sharp edges, cracks, corrosion, and damage.
  • Check the overhead attachment point and make sure the strap will not land on a joint, fitting, damper, or access opening.

Tools and materials

Approved perforated or solid hanger strap, approved structural fasteners or attachment hardware, snips or strap cutter, file, tape, level, lift, gloves, and edge protection where required.

Lay it out

  1. Mark the support point on the duct body, clear of joints and fittings.
  2. Lay out the overhead attachment directly above or as shown on the approved detail.
  3. Allow enough strap length for the wrap or saddle and final attachment.

Set and support it

  1. Install the approved overhead attachment first.
  2. Cut and deburr the strap ends.
  3. Form the strap around or under the duct without pinching the spiral or insulation.

Make the connection

  1. 1

Raise the duct to the required elevation.

  2. 2

Wrap or saddle the strap around the duct body.

  3. 3

Keep the support centered and away from the longitudinal or spiral seam where practical.

  4. 4

Attach both strap ends using the approved structural connection.

  5. 5

Adjust elevation without twisting the duct.

  6. 6

Secure loose strap tails and verify no sharp edge remains.

  7. 7

Release the lift slowly and watch for flattening or slip.

Check the install

  • The duct remains round.
  • The strap bears evenly and does not cut insulation or jacket.
  • The structural attachment is approved and complete.
  • The support is clear of joints, fittings, and access points.
  • No loose tail or sharp edge remains.

Common mistakes

  • Using strap on duct too large or heavy for the method.
  • Overtightening the strap and flattening the pipe.
  • Attaching to deck or framing without an approved connection.
  • Leaving a sharp strap end against insulation or a worker path.

Stop and ask

Stop if the duct size or weight exceeds the approved strap method, the structural attachment is uncertain, or the strap distorts the duct or damages insulation.
