Before you start
- Confirm the approved support detail, actual duct weight, support spacing, attachment substrate, hardware size, corrosion protection, and any insulation, seismic, vibration, or rooftop requirements before installation.
- Confirm anchor type, rod size, trapeze span, bar or strut size, duct width, insulation outside dimension, and approved load.
- Inspect rods, nuts, washers, strut, angle, and anchors.
- Check that the trapeze will support the duct body and not the flange joint.
Tools and materials
Approved anchors, two threaded rods, strut or angle, nuts, washers, locknuts, level or laser, tape, lift, insulation shields where required, and retainers where specified.
Lay it out
- Mark both overhead anchors from the duct centerline.
- Set the rod spacing wider than the duct or insulated outside dimension.
- Keep the trapeze clear of transverse joints and weak fitting bodies.
Set and support it
- Install both anchors and rods.
- Cut and deburr the trapeze bar.
- Set lower nuts and washers and level the bar before loading.
Make the connection
- 1
Raise the duct over the trapeze.
- 2
Center the duct on the bar.
- 3
Install insulation shields or saddles where required.
- 4
Adjust both rods evenly to final elevation.
- 5
Install upper or locking nuts as detailed.
- 6
Add retainers only where specified and without damaging the duct.
- 7
Release the lift and recheck level and edge clearance.
Check the install
- Both rods are plumb.
- The bar is level and sized for the span.
- The duct is centered and supported under the body.
- Insulation is protected where present.
- Locknuts and washers are fully set.
Common mistakes
- Landing a flange joint on the trapeze.
- Using a bar too short for the insulated width.
- Adjusting one rod only and rolling the duct.
- Skipping locknuts.
Stop and ask
Stop if anchor, rod, bar span, support load, or insulation protection is not covered by the approved detail.
