Before you start

  • Confirm duct material, collar material, weld procedure, branch load, coating or finish repair, and hot-work controls.
  • Inspect the opening and collar fit.
  • Verify the welder is qualified for the material and procedure.
  • Coordinate fire watch and ventilation.

Tools and materials

Welded branch collar, approved welding equipment and filler, fit-up clamps, preparation tools, PPE, fire blankets, extinguisher, branch support, and coating or finish repair materials.

Lay it out

  1. Mark the opening and branch centerline.
  2. Fit the collar to the duct curvature or face.
  3. Plan support and welding access around the full perimeter.

Set and support it

  1. Support the main and branch independently.
  2. Clamp the collar square.
  3. Keep the joint unloaded during welding.

Make the connection

  1. 1

Prepare the opening and collar edges.

  2. 2

Fit and tack in the approved sequence.

  3. 3

    Recheck alignment.

  7. 7

    Connect and support the branch.

Check the install

  • The weld is continuous.
  • No burn-through or distortion is present.
  • The collar is square.
  • The branch has independent support.

Common mistakes

  • Welding without a qualified procedure.
  • Using the weld to bridge a large gap.
  • Skipping fire watch.
  • Coating before inspection.

Stop and ask

Stop without approved material, weld procedure, qualified welder, hot-work controls, or independent branch support.
