Before you start

Tools and materials

Top-mounted rectangular tap, cutting tools, clamps, square, level, fasteners, sealant, vertical branch support, and deburring tools.

Lay it out

  1. Mark the opening on the top panel.
  2. Confirm vertical branch plumb line.
  3. Keep clear of reinforcement and hangers.

Set and support it

  1. Support the main locally if required.
  2. Clamp the tap flush.
  3. Install overhead branch support.

Make the connection

    Cut while controlling the cookie.

    Deburr and clean the opening.

  3. 3

    Set the tap flush.

    Square the vertical throat.

  5. 5

    Clamp and fasten evenly.

  6. 6

    Seal the perimeter.

  7. 7

    Connect and support the vertical branch.

Check the install

  • The top panel does not bow.
  • The branch is plumb.
  • The flange sits flat.
  • The branch is independently supported.

Common mistakes

  • Cutting into an unsupported top panel.
  • Using the branch as a lever.
  • Skipping overhead branch support.
  • Fastening a tap that rocks on a crossbreak.

Stop if the top panel lacks reinforcement for the fitting size or the vertical branch cannot be independently supported.
