Before you start

  • Confirm taper direction, inlet and outlet sizes, branch route, and design length.
  • Inspect the tapered body and flanges.
  • Verify the taper is not reversed or too abrupt.
  • Check the outlet centerline.

Tools and materials

Tapered rectangular tap, cutting tools, clamps, fasteners, sealant, branch trapeze, level, and deburring tools.

Lay it out

  1. Mark the opening and taper direction.
  2. Align the reduced outlet to the branch.
  3. Check full fitting clearance.

Set and support it

  1. Support the main and branch.
  2. Clamp the tap square.
  3. Keep the body from twisting.

Make the connection

  1. 1

    Cut and deburr the opening.

  2. 2

Set the tapered tap in the correct direction.

  3. 3

Square the inlet to the main.

  4. 4

    Clamp and fasten.

  5. 5

    Seal the perimeter.

  6. 6

    Align the reduced outlet.

  7. 7

    Connect and support the branch.

Check the install

  • The taper is smooth.
  • No necking or twist remains.
  • The outlet aligns.
  • The branch is supported.

Common mistakes

  • Installing the taper backward.
  • Using an overly abrupt fitting.
  • Twisting the body to reach.
  • Skipping outlet support.

Stop and ask

Stop if the taper is reversed, too abrupt for the design, or cannot align without twisting the fitting.
