Before you start

  • Confirm spin-in size, damper blade, handle side, insulation, ceiling access, and branch route.
  • Check the main for seams, reinforcement, and nearby fittings.
  • Verify the handle will remain accessible after closure.
  • Support the cookie before the final cut.

Tools and materials

Spin-in with manual damper, layout template, cutting tools, hand seamer, clamps, approved fasteners, sealant, branch support, and hand tools.

Lay it out

  1. Mark the opening from the approved branch centerline.
  2. Orient the handle toward the accessible side.
  3. Keep the opening clear of seams and reinforcement.

Set and support it

  1. Support the main if needed.
  2. Clamp the spin-in square and flush.
  3. Install the first branch hanger.

Make the connection

    Cut the opening while controlling the cookie.

    Deburr the edge.

  3. 3

    Insert and lock or fasten the spin-in.

    Square the collar.

  5. 5

    Seal the base perimeter.

    Install and test the quadrant and blade.

    Connect and support the branch.

Check the install

  • The damper rotates fully.
  • The handle remains accessible.
  • The collar is square and tight.
  • The base seal is continuous.

Common mistakes

  • Burying the handle.
  • Putting a screw into the blade path.
  • Fastening before squaring.
  • Letting the branch load the collar.

Stop and ask

Stop if future ceiling or insulation will bury the handle, the blade cannot travel fully, or the opening location conflicts with the main.
