Before you start
- Confirm shoe orientation, branch angle, airflow direction, and available clearance.
- Check the main for seams, joints, reinforcement, and nearby fittings.
- Verify the shoe body fits before cutting.
- Support the cookie before the final cut.
Tools and materials
45-degree shoe tap, layout tools, approved cutting tools, clamps, square, approved fasteners, sealant, branch hanger, and deburring tools.
Lay it out
- Mark the opening and the directional shoe angle.
- Confirm the shoe points with the intended airflow.
- Check the outlet centerline against the branch route.
Set and support it
- Support the main as needed.
- Clamp the shoe flush and square.
- Provide branch support so the fitting carries no downstream weight.
Make the connection
- 1
Cut the opening and control the cookie.
- 2
Deburr the edge.
- 3
Set the shoe in the correct airflow direction.
- 4
Align the outlet to the branch.
- 5
Clamp the flange flat.
- 6
Fasten from the corners outward.
- 7
Seal the full perimeter.
- 8
Connect and support the branch.
Check the install
- The shoe points correctly.
- The throat is smooth.
- The flange does not rock.
- The branch aligns without side pull.
Common mistakes
- Installing the shoe backward.
- Cutting before checking the full fitting body.
- Fastening one corner and cocking the flange.
- Letting the branch hang from the shoe.
Stop and ask
Stop if the shoe orientation or branch angle does not match the layout, or if the fitting body conflicts with structure or reinforcement.
