Before you start

  • Confirm grille size, register-box dimensions, sidewall depth, wall construction, neck location, and branch route.
  • Verify the wall is not rated or that the approved rated assembly is available.
  • Inspect the box, flange, collar, and grille mounting surface.
  • Coordinate framing and finish thickness before setting the box.

Tools and materials

Register box, branch duct, approved wall support or framing, fasteners, sealant, level, square, tape, marker, and trim or grille hardware.

Lay it out

  1. Mark the finished grille opening from architectural dimensions.
  2. Set the box depth for the final wall finish.
  3. Align the collar with the branch route.

Set and support it

  1. Support the box independently from approved framing or structure.
  2. Keep the box square and flush to the finish plane.
  3. Support the branch so it does not twist the box.

Make the connection

  1. 1

Set the box in the framed opening.

  2. 2

Square and secure it at the final depth.

  3. 3

Connect the branch to the collar.

  4. 4

Mechanically fasten and seal the joint.

  5. 5

    Install or verify branch support.

  6. 6

Protect the opening during wall finish work.

  7. 7

Install the grille and confirm full seating.

Check the install

  • The box is square and at correct finish depth.
  • The grille fits flat.
  • The branch does not load the box.
  • The connection is sealed.
  • The wall finish is not cracked or distorted.

Common mistakes

  • Setting the box before finish thickness is known.
  • Letting the branch pull the box out of square.
  • Using wallboard alone as support.
  • Ignoring a rated-wall condition.

Stop and ask

Stop if wall rating, framing, finish depth, grille opening, or box support is unresolved.
