Before you start

  • Confirm diffuser location, boot size, neck size, finished ceiling elevation, connection type, and independent boot support.
  • Verify the ceiling grid or drywall will not carry duct weight.
  • Inspect the boot, collar, face, and seams for damage.
  • Measure branch length only after the boot is held at final position.

Tools and materials

Diffuser boot, branch duct, approved fasteners, sealant, boot support hardware, branch hanger, level, tape, marker, snips, and hand tools.

Lay it out

  1. Locate the boot from the reflected ceiling plan.
  2. Set the boot face to the finished ceiling plane.
  3. Align the collar with the incoming branch.

Set and support it

  1. Support the boot independently from approved structure.
  2. Keep the face square and level.
  3. Support the branch close enough that it does not pull the boot.

Make the connection

  1. 1

Set and secure the boot at final elevation.

  2. 2

Measure and cut the branch to the actual collar location.

  3. 3

Bring the branch to the collar without moving the boot.

  4. 4

Seat, mechanically fasten, and seal the connection.

  5. 5

    Install the branch hanger.

  6. 6

Recheck the boot face after the branch is released.

  7. 7

Verify the diffuser can be installed and removed.

Check the install

  • The boot is level and square.
  • The ceiling carries no duct weight.
  • The branch enters the collar straight.
  • The joint is seated, fastened, and sealed.
  • The diffuser remains serviceable.

Common mistakes

  • Using the branch to hold the boot in place.
  • Measuring before the ceiling elevation is final.
  • Letting the boot rest on grid.
  • Pulling the boot sideways with a short branch.

Stop and ask

Stop if the boot location, ceiling elevation, support, or collar condition is not final or approved.
