Before you start
- Confirm wye size, inlet direction, branch angles, airflow split, and balancing-damper requirements.
- Inspect all three connection ends.
- Field-check both outlet routes before lifting.
- Stage the wye, pipe, fasteners, sealant, fitting support, branch hangers, level, and tools.
Tools and materials
Round wye, snap-lock pipe for inlet and outlets, approved fasteners, approved sealant, dedicated fitting support, branch hangers, level, tape, marker, and hand tools.
Lay it out
- Mark the inlet and both outlet centerlines.
- Check wye rotation so both branches leave at intended angles.
- Verify downstream fittings can be reached without side pull.
Set and support it
- Support the wye body independently.
- Install or mark the first hanger on each outlet.
- Keep the fitting from rolling while connecting the inlet.
Make the connection
- 1
Set the supported wye on the inlet centerline.
- 2
Connect and fasten the inlet while holding rotation.
- 3
Connect the first outlet without moving the fitting.
- 4
Connect the second outlet the same way.
- 5
Install dampers where shown and keep handles accessible.
- 6
Fasten and seal all three joints.
- 7
Load both branch hangers and confirm the wye stays stable.
Check the install
- The wye body has independent support.
- Both branches leave at intended angles.
- No outlet is forced away from the fitting angle.
- All joints are seated, fastened, and sealed.
- Damper handles remain accessible.
Common mistakes
- Connecting branches before supporting the fitting.
- Rolling the wye to reach one branch.
- Using pipe to bend an outlet to a different angle.
- Supporting only the inlet.
Stop and ask
Stop if either branch must be forced away from the fitting angle, the orientation is wrong, or the body cannot be independently supported.
