Before you start

  • Confirm the spin-in location, branch size, damper requirement, airflow direction, and clearance from seams, reinforcement, and other taps.
  • The spin-in must be cut in, squared from the main, clamped, fastened, and sealed before the branch is connected.
  • Check that the collar is round, secure, and long enough for the pipe connection.
  • Stage the branch pipe, fasteners, sealant, hanger, level, and hand tools.

Tools and materials

Snap-lock pipe, completed spin-in collar, crimper if required, approved fasteners, approved sealant, screw gun, level, tape, marker, and the first branch hanger.

Lay it out

  1. Run the branch centerline from the spin-in collar to the next fitting or terminal.
  2. Check the collar direction and damper-handle position before cutting the branch.
  3. Locate the first hanger so the branch cannot lever the spin-in out of square.

Set and support it

  1. Support the main and branch independently.
  2. Install the first branch hanger before or immediately after the connection.
  3. Bring the pipe straight to the collar without moving the spin-in.

Make the connection

  1. 1

Verify the spin-in is tight, square, fastened, and sealed.

  2. 2

Set the damper handle where it will remain accessible.

  3. 3

Crimp the pipe end evenly only if required.

  4. 4

Seat the pipe fully on the collar.

  5. 5

Rotate the seam to the planned orientation.

  6. 6

Install approved fasteners evenly around the joint.

  7. 7

    Seal the pipe-to-collar connection.

  8. 8

Set the branch in its hanger and release it slowly.

Check the install

  • The pipe is fully seated and centered on the collar.
  • The spin-in remains square and flat against the main.
  • The damper handle remains reachable.
  • The first hanger carries the branch weight.
  • The tap flange and pipe joint are sealed.

Common mistakes

  • Connecting before the spin-in is squared and secured.
  • Letting branch weight pull the collar downward.
  • Burying the damper handle.
  • Forcing an angled branch onto a straight collar.

Stop and ask

Stop if the spin-in is loose, crooked, wrongly located, too close to another fitting, or moves when the branch is brought to it.
