Before you start
- Confirm the diffuser or register location, finished ceiling elevation, boot size, collar size, and required connection type.
- Verify the boot has independent support and is not expected to rest on ceiling grid.
- Inspect the collar for crushing, tears, or looseness.
- Stage the pipe, fasteners, sealant, boot support, branch hanger, level, and tools.
Tools and materials
Snap-lock pipe, diffuser or register boot, boot support hardware, branch hanger, approved fasteners, approved sealant, level, tape, marker, snips, and screw gun.
Lay it out
- Establish the boot center from the reflected ceiling plan and finish plane.
- Measure the branch after the boot is held at final elevation.
- Check that the branch approaches the collar straight.
Set and support it
- Set and support the boot at final elevation before connecting the branch.
- Keep the boot square to the ceiling opening.
- Install a branch hanger close enough that the pipe does not hang from the collar.
Make the connection
- 1
Verify the supported boot is square and the collar points toward the branch.
- 2
Cut the pipe to measured length and finish the cut edge.
- 3
Crimp the pipe end evenly if required.
- 4
Bring the pipe to the collar without moving the boot.
- 5
Seat, fasten, and seal the connection.
- 6
Set the branch into its hanger.
- 7
Recheck the boot face after releasing the pipe.
Check the install
- The boot face is level, square, and at correct finish depth.
- The pipe enters the collar straight.
- The boot and branch are independently supported.
- The joint is seated, fastened, and sealed.
- The ceiling does not carry duct weight.
Common mistakes
- Using the branch to hold the boot at ceiling height.
- Cutting the pipe before the boot is set.
- Allowing the branch to pull the boot sideways.
- Adding flex without confirming it is allowed.
Stop and ask
Stop if boot support is missing, the ceiling location is not final, the collar is damaged, or the branch cannot reach without moving the boot.
