Before you start
- Confirm width over 48 inches, gauge, reinforcement, tie rods, flange system, support span, lifting method, and panel pressure.
- Inspect wide panels for bowing, oil-canning, damaged reinforcement, and flange distortion.
- Use spreader or multiple lift points.
- Verify engineered wide trapezes are ready.
Tools and materials
Wide rectangular duct, reinforced TDC or angle-joint components, gasket, corners, cleats or bolts, engineered wide trapezes, spreader lifting equipment, clamps, drift pins, level, and sealant.
Lay it out
- Mark bottom plane and support locations.
- Keep supports clear of flanges.
- Plan fitting and reinforcement access.
Set and support it
- Install wide trapezes before lifting.
- Use spread lifting points.
- Support heavy fittings independently.
Make the connection
- 1
Set the first section on wide support.
- 2
Bring the second section to the same bottom plane.
- 3
Install gasket and align flanges.
- 4
Drift and clamp without bowing the flange.
- 5
Install all corners, cleats, bolts, and reinforcement.
- 6
Seal required joints.
- 7
Load support and inspect the bottom panel.
Check the install
- Flanges remain straight.
- Reinforcement and tie rods are complete.
- The bottom plane is stable.
- The joint carries no support load.
- No panel buckling remains.
Common mistakes
- Lifting from one point.
- Skipping tie rods or reinforcement.
- Using bolts to pull bowed flanges together.
- Using a narrow trapeze.
Stop and ask
Stop if required reinforcement, tie rods, wide support, or lifting control is missing for the duct width.
