S-and-Drive Square Duct · Long drive
Trim and finish long drive
Drive extends excessively
Task typeLong drive
Tools / equipmentSnips, seamer, gloves
Before you start
- Confirm the drive is fully seated before deciding how much excess can be removed.
- Identify the required end-fold or securing method.
- Protect nearby insulation, wiring, and finished surfaces from sharp cutoffs.
Lay it out
- Mark the trim point only after accounting for the required end engagement.
- Keep enough material to fold or secure the end without weakening the seam.
Set and support it
- Hold the drive and cutoff so it does not spring or fall.
- Support the duct if trimming could disturb a loose joint.
Make the connection
- 1
Verify the drive grips the complete side seam.
- 2
Mark and cut only the true excess.
- 3
Deburr the cut edge.
- 4
Fold, cap, or secure the end in the approved manner.
- 5
Restore sealant at the corner if disturbed.
- 6
Remove all sharp scraps from the work area.
Check the install
- The drive remains fully engaged after trimming.
- The end is secure, smooth, and not a cut hazard.
- The joint has not opened or loosened.
- No metal scrap remains above ceilings or inside duct.
Common mistakes
- Trimming before verifying the drive is seated.
- Cutting too short to secure the end.
- Leaving a razor-sharp tail.
- Allowing the cutoff to fall into the duct or occupied area.
Stop and ask
Stop if trimming would reduce lock engagement, the drive is loose, or the side seam is damaged.
