S-and-Drive Square Duct · Short drive
Replace undersized drive
Drive too short
Task typeShort drive
Tools / equipmentSnips, replacement drive, hammer
Before you start
- Verify the drive is actually too short and not simply installed too high or incompletely seated.
- Support and unload the joint before removing the drive.
- Measure the full side lock and approved end treatment.
Lay it out
- Cut the replacement long enough to engage the complete side seam and permit the required secured ends.
- Check that the side lock itself is straight and usable.
Set and support it
- Clamp the side edges together so removing the old drive does not open the joint.
- Keep the top and bottom S-cleats fully engaged.
Make the connection
- 1
Remove the short drive without tearing the side hems.
- 2
Straighten minor lock distortion.
- 3
Cut and form a correct replacement drive.
- 4
Start it square and seat it for the full side length.
- 5
Secure the ends, deburr, and restore the seal.
- 6
Release the clamp and inspect the whole joint.
Check the install
- The replacement drive covers and grips the complete side lock.
- Both ends are secured and have no sharp projection.
- The side seam stays closed after clamps are removed.
- The top and bottom S-cleats remain engaged.
Common mistakes
- Leaving a short drive because the visible middle section feels tight.
- Adding a second scrap piece to extend the drive.
- Cutting the replacement without allowance for end treatment.
- Driving over a damaged side lock.
Stop and ask
Stop if the side hem is torn, the replacement profile cannot be formed correctly, or the joint opens when unloaded.
