S-and-Drive Square Duct · Reinstalling reused duct
Reconnect salvaged duct
Existing S-and-drive section
Task typeReinstalling reused duct
Tools / equipmentSeamer, replacement locks, sealant
Before you start
- Confirm reuse is allowed and the duct is clean, uncontaminated, and structurally sound.
- Inspect dimensions, seams, reinforcement, lock edges, coating, liner, and previous sealant.
- Identify the correct system and airflow direction.
Lay it out
- Field-measure the new location and compare it with the salvaged piece.
- Plan joints so damaged or shortened ends are not hidden in the installation.
Set and support it
- Provide supports appropriate for the reused section and fittings.
- Straighten only minor deformation while the piece is on a stable surface.
Make the connection
- 1
Remove old loose sealant and debris.
- 2
Repair or replace damaged S-locks and drives.
- 3
Square the duct end and verify dimensions.
- 4
Install the piece using the normal S-and-drive sequence.
- 5
Seal with approved new material.
- 6
Label or document reused material if required.
Check the install
- The reused duct matches the system size and construction.
- Locks and seams are sound.
- No contamination, rust-through, wet liner, or severe damage remains.
- The final joint performs like a new installation.
Common mistakes
- Reusing a section because it looks close enough.
- Installing over old failed sealant.
- Mixing duct from different systems or pressure classes.
- Hiding damaged lock edges inside the new joint.
Stop and ask
Stop if the duct is contaminated, severely corroded, cracked, wrong size/class, lined with damaged material, or reuse is not approved.
