S-and-Drive Square Duct · Vertical joint
Install S-and-drive on a vertical drop
Short vertical drop
Task typeVertical joint
Tools / equipmentLift/support, S-lock, drives, plumb level
Before you start
- Confirm the duct size, end construction, pressure class, seal class, and joint shown on the approved shop drawing.
- Inspect both duct ends for crushed corners, torn locks, bowed panels, loose reinforcement, or shop damage before lifting them into place.
- Make sure the supports are already installed or the sections are otherwise held so the joint is not carrying the weight of the run.
- Stage the correct S-cleats, drive cleats, sealant, hand tools, clamps, and access equipment before starting the joint.
- Confirm the upper and lower supports or restraints are installed before the vertical joint is assembled.
Lay it out
- Establish a plumb reference from structure, wall line, or the approved riser/drop centerline.
- Check that the lower connection, boot, or terminal can be reached without using the joint to correct an offset.
- Plan the drive orientation so the ends can be secured and inspected after the drop is in place.
Set and support it
- Secure the upper section independently.
- Lift the lower section into position and restrain it so it cannot fall or rotate.
- Match the side planes and confirm the lower section is plumb before closing the joint.
Make the connection
- 1
Fit the S-cleats to the horizontal hems while the lower section is controlled.
- 2
Bring the vertical faces together evenly and verify all corners enter the locks.
- 3
Start the side drives from the safest accessible direction.
- 4
Seat both drives fully while keeping the lower section restrained.
- 5
Finish the drive ends and seal the joint.
- 6
Install or confirm the lower support, boot support, or lateral restraint before removing the lift.
Check the install
- The drop is plumb and does not twist between the upper run and lower connection.
- The lower section is independently supported or restrained.
- Both drives are fully seated and secured against gravity movement.
- The joint is sealed and visible for inspection.
Common mistakes
- Letting the lower drop hang from the S-and-drive joint.
- Using the joint to pull a mislocated boot or terminal into place.
- Installing drives where their ends cannot be secured.
- Removing the lift before the lower restraint is complete.
Stop and ask
Stop if the lower section cannot be safely restrained, the drop is too heavy for the planned handling method, the route is not plumb, or the support detail is missing.
